Arthur (PBS Kids) contains a lot of printables including coloring pages, trading cards, and bookmarks.

Berenstein Bears: Official Website contains a variety of printable coloring pages and activities (board game, grizzbee, etc.).

Jan Brett's Home Page has an Activity Page filled with printables that can be used in the classroom such as projects, coloring pages, alphabet flash cards, character masks, awards & certificates, and more.

A Journey Quest with The Hungry Caterpillar (Webquest, K-2) uses the book and Internet resources to learn about caterpillars.

Read Write Think: Word Wizard: The Hungry Little Caterpillar contains word puzzles with scrambled letters taken from the book. The game is in Flash and students are given clues to help unscramble the words.

A Quest for Respect with The Grouchy Ladybug (Webquest, 1-2) uses Eric Carle's book and Internet resources to have students learn about respect and ladybugs. The site contains an activity sheet, partner score sheet, and rubric.

Ramona Party Kit - contains downloads that could be used for an author promotion of Beverly Clearly or the character of Ramona.

Celebrate Dr. Seuss from A to Z Teacher Stuff contains links to a variety of Dr. Seuss resources including lesson plans & activities, web-based lessons, units, song & poems, worksheets & printable pages, online fun & games, and resource sites.
Dr. Seuss: Themes and Activities for Kids
from ChildFun has some fun little activities involving Dr. Seuss books such as Feet Family for The Foot Book, and Balance it and Musical Hats for The Cat in the Hat.

Jules Feiffer: I Lost My Bear - 4 coloring pages

Flat Stanley Project is a project taken from the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. Basically you make a Flat Stanley and journal send both items to another school where Stanely will be a guest for awhile and the journal will be completed. List of Participants is available at the website.

Grimm's Fairy Tales from National Geographic contains 12 of their stories of which 4 have audio. The site contains a basic timeline of their lives, a map, fairly lengthy article on the brothers Grimm as well as links to related sites. This site would be for use with older students.

Guy Gilchrist: The Read In has a coloring page with 12 pages with accompanying poems.

Martin Handford: Where's Waldo Activity Kit (PDF) is really only 2 pages but it does include a colouring page and fact files on Waldo and Handford.

Kevin Henkes: Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse - coloring sheets, maze, dot-to-dot, and word search. Wemberly - coloring sheets, stick puppets, maze, word search, and dot-to-dot.

Will Hillenbrand: Starting from Sketch is a 16-page booklet that describes how he goes about creating illustrations for books with tips for students on how to create their own illustrations. (PDF)

Anna Grossnickle Hines - colouring pages

Internet School Library Media Center: Index to Internet Sites: Children's and Young Adults' Authors & Illustrators contains links for specific authors and illustrators as well as other handy information such as author birthdays, appearances, interviews online, and name pronunciation guide. Many of the pages also have have teacher resource files which contain lesson plan links as well as biography links.

William Joyce - two coloring pages from Bently & Egg and The Leaf Men. He also has colouring and craft pages (oscillator and robot) for Rolie Polie Olie.

A Quest for A Wind in the Door (Webquest, 9-10) uses the novel as part of a cross-curricular project for Biology and Language Arts. The site contains printable handouts, rubrics, and more.
A Quest for A Wrinkle in Time
(Webquest, High School) uses the novel in a Language Arts unit. The students have a choice of projects that they can produce such as a story, comic book, puppet show, or virtual museum. There is an online study guide with questions on each chapter as well as rubrics, and resource links.

My Home Library: Book Plates contains a collection of wonderful book plates in 3 sizes. The book plates are designed by a number of British children's book illustrators, and they are all in black and white. You could put them in school library books, or make them available to students. New - they have just added a great selection of colour plates as well.

Barbara Park's Junie B. Jones activities - word jumble, diploma, graduation cap, picture search, and paper bow (PDF).

Peggy Parish: Amelia Bedelia - word search, word jumble, maze, and colouring sheets.

Dav Pilkey's website has coloring pages, word searches, and activity pages for Captain Underpants as well as other characters. There is also a colouring page promoting reading.

J.K. Rowling

Teaching with Harry Potter from A to Z Teacher Stuff contains links to lesson plans and activities, worksheets and printables, resources, and fun & games.

J. K. Rowling Official Site is graphic intensive but a nice place for the Harry Potter fan to visit. Mostly contains info about her Harry Potter and her writing.

Scholastic: Harry Potter contains lots of info on the books including a pronunciation guide, a discussion chamber, quiz, printable poster, polls, and a screen-saver. Fun little sites that kids should enjoy.

Nicole Rubel - bookmark and bookplate

Louis Sachar: Holes is used by Read, Write,Think to create an online Shockwave Word Mover activity in which students are given a passage and allowed to manipulate the text in order to create a found poem which can then be printed.

Ruth Sanderson - art and writing project for The Golden Mare, the Firebird and the Magic Ring

Maurice Sendak: American Masters: Educational Resources from PBS contains 2 lessons (K-2 and language arts; 6-8 and music) based on Where the Wild Things Are.

Reader's Theater Editions are reader's scripts based on Aaron Shephard picture books, and stories from other authors or cultures. These stories fall into the categories of humour, fantasy, and "world tales" adapted from a number of cultures. The scripts are largely aimed towards students between grades 3 and 9 but there are a few scripts for students outside that range.

Shel Silverstein has a couple of poetry activities that you can download and print for use in your classrooms from the Harper Children's website: The Classroom Activities Kit, and Poetry Activity Booklet (PDF).

Lemony Snicket: Series of Unfortunate Events - Grim Greeting Card, Trading Cards, and Unwanted Poster (Count Olaf).

William Steig: games and reading guides

The Official Chris Van Allsburg Website contains information on Van Allsburg including video clips of interviews, coloring pages, bookmarks, news, contact information, and more.

Houghton Mifflin also has page of Curriculum Connections for the Polar Express including quite a few printable PDFs.

Teaching Point of View with Two Bad Ants is a lesson for grades 3-5 that comes from Read, Write, Think. The lesson includes printable resources as well as assessment rubrics and related links.

General Lessons/Activities

AskERIC Lesson Plans: School Library Media Activities Monthly Lesson Plans used to have its own page on AskERIC but I haven't been able to find the page. However, if you search for "School Library Media Activities Monthly" then it will return the lesson plans that come from the print magazine of the same name.

Blue Web'n Learning Sites Library contains a searchable database of over 1000 learning sites that are categorized by subject area, audience, and type. They regularly update the site but you can also subscribe to their mailing list, and they'll e-mail you weekly about hot education sites on the Internet with brief descriptions and links.  

Book Raps: An Internet Curriculum-based Project: Let's Get Serious! by Cherrol McGhee (paper presented in 1998) explains Book Raps, and provides the resources for getting started.

Education World: Lesson Planning: Author! Author! Activities for National Children's Book Week! contains 10 activities such as Goldilocks: The Sequel, Poetry Slam!, Read-a-Thon, Personalized Books, and more.

English Online: 100 Things to do with Books are 1 sentence suggestions on what you can do with books that are categorized according to The Characters (i.e. Explain where the main character would prefer to vacation and why), The Setting, The Author, The Past (i.e. If your main character is from the past, how would he act if the book took place today?), The Future, Comparisons, Presenting, Speaking (i.e. Deliver a sales talk for your book), Drama (i.e. Write a TV commercial for your book), Creative Writing, Vocabulary, Literary Qualities, Library Projects, Career Education (i.e. Make a job application for the main character and fill it in), Values Clarification (i.e. As a psychiatrist, analyse the conflicts and problems of a character), and Fun (Defend: This book should never be spoiled by a teacher requiring a book report).

Explorers of Canada Hall of Fame Webquest is a webquest we developed for a teacher-librarianship course. It is for 4th graders, and it makes use of the library as well as the Internet.

Gander Academy: Readers Theatre Resources for Teachers and Students contains links on readers theatre, readers theatre scripts, writing scripts, and also recommended print and online resources.

Laura Chandler's File Cabinet: Teaching Resources: Accelerated Reader Files contains record sheets and teacher timesavers (PDF), and the site also has Literature Circles and Literary Lunch Bunch which explains both activities, and the site includes documents that you can print and use.

Library Media Services: Teaching and Learning: Collaborative Units Pre K-12 contains some k-12 lessons from some educators in Nebraska.

LION: Lesson Plans & Teaching Activities for School Librarians contains links to lessons and activities, as well links to information skills documents and related material.

Outta Ray's Head: Library Lesson Plans is a really great site that I used during my practicuum. The Library page contains the following activities or lessons: Library Orientation (junior grades), Using the Library Media Center (grade 9), Metric in the Library (grade 9 science), Science and Technology: Monsters We Have Created (grade 12), The Library Challenge (elementary), The T-Shirt Bookmark (intermediate), and the Fiction Book Retrieval Relay. The site also contains lessons in literature, poetry, and writing.

Oz-TeacherNet Projects: Book Raps is an Australian project that is basically a book discussion via e-mail.

The Read In: Lesson Plans (K-12) contains a variey of lesson plans such as Once Upon A Time: A Literacy-based Social Studies Unit (primary), Cartoon Strip Book Report (intermediate), Biography Mobiles (middle school), and Container Book Report (secondary).

Read, Write, Think: Word Wizard: contains 4 word puzzle Flash games. Each game takes words from a book and scrambles them; students are also given clues to help unscramble the words. Four books are: Franklin in the Dark, The Hungry Little Caterpillar, Chrysanthemum, and Corduroy.

Resource-Based Learning Online Personal site from an Australian teacher-librarian that contains information and links in the following categories: Information Literacy, Resource Based Learning, Knowledge Management, Learning Technologies, Teacher Librarianship, Web Design, Workshop and Presentations, and Miscellaneous.

The INTERNET: Know Before You Go Into Cyberspace! is a site for elementary-aged students from the US Department of Justice. This site has somewhat of a legal/ethical focus which might be worth exploring with students. There is a section that poses 5 scenarios and asks students what they would do, and after they choose it explains the implications of the scenario, and then has students think about the situation in a more real-world way. There's also a page with some do's and don'ts, as well as a section that contains the story of a teenage hacker in Boston.

Shape Books from ABCteach contain templates for book pages in a variety of shapes including television, rocket ship, stamp, crayon, iguana, maple leaf, and more.

Story Arts: Lesson Plans and Activities contains 20 really creative story-related activities, projects, and games.

The WebQuest Page contains resources for creating your WebQuest, as well as links to WebQuests in every grade and subject.

ALA: AASL: Learning through the Library contains k-12 teaching-learning practices involving libraries, summaries of research studies and papers related to information literacy, and links to other websites.

Alice in Infoland: FLIP it is an information problem-solving strategy.

Baltimore Public Schools: Research Modules Supporting the Essential Curriculum and Information Literacy has quite a few interesting lesson plans that can be shared with teachers. There is at least 1 unit for each grade such as Let's Celebrate Authors (grade 1), The New Zoo (grade 2), Changing Worldviews: Middle Ages to Renaissance (grade 7). They also have units in subject areas such as Foreign Languages (Bienvenue à Paris!), Family Studies (Dining by Design: Biotechnology and Our Food) and Health (Anti-Drug Campaign).

Big6 Skills Overview explains the Big 6 model, and also provides provides examples for each component.

Bloom's Taxonomy lists the 6 major levels of Bloom's Taxonomy with examples of behaviours and objectives.

Booktalks: Quick and Simple by Nancy Keane is a great source for booktalk information with over 1000 books. You can access the database through their author, title, or subject indexes, or by interest level. The site also has links to book review sources and reading lists, and the Booktalking Tips page will help you develop your own booktalks.

Crayola Canada contains a variety of printable colouring pages, and craft activities on their Inspiring Ideas page, and their Activity Book page.

CyberTours: Hands-on Instructional Tours of the Web are a "series of 12 to 15 pre-selected Websites focusing on a particular curriculum theme." These sites are on the following guided "tours": Active Learning Sites, Web Evaluation Guide, Reference on the Web, Teaching the Internet, Search Strategies, Weaving a Web-Based Curriculum, Planning Your Library Web Site, and Transformational Technologies (coming soon).

Kids Domain: Back to School Fun contains crafts, clipart, games, downloads, etc.

Jamie McKenzie: FILLING THE TOOL BOX Classroom Strategies to Engender Student Questioning provides a number of different strategies and tips to promote student questioning such as taxonomy of questions, interview, the five-minute question, classroom climate, and more.

National Geographic: Coloring Book contains 35 good quality coloring pages on a variety of insects and animals.

Puzzlemaker is a handy little site that lets you create puzzles for your class. All you have to do is enter in the information and the puzzle will then be created for you. There are several different types of puzzles so you're students won't get bored of seeing the same type of puzzle over and over again. The site also has mazes, and a variety of educational "games" for students.

Teacher Tools: Bookmarks contains 12 printable bookmarks promoting reading.

Templates by Donovan contains bookmark templates and other goodies.

Queen's Libraries: Library Tutorials contains the following tutorials for librarians: Designing Library Instruction on the Web (13 May 1997), Resource-Based Learning and
Learning Online: Rethinking Library Instruction (11 January 1998)

Very Best Kids is a site for children (K-5) that is sponsored by Nestle. This site was suggested by a teacher who has used the craft ideas with her students, and she says that the projects are "incredibly simple to make using their step-by-step instructions, pictures, and printable templates." Besides craft ideas, the site also has about 20 lessons suitable for elementary classes.
