Advice for a New Library Media Specialist contains some practical advice in point-form so it's a quick read.

CBC News: Coalition Says There's A Crisis in Canada's School Libraries (11 March 2002) discusses the effects on student achievement as well as on the Canadian publishing industry.

Doug Johnson: Presentations and Workshops (handouts in PDF):
The New and Improved School Library Media Program (1999) discusses the experiences of one school district in restructuring its library media program and in updating the role of the teacher-librarians; it includes a 13 point library/media program checklist.
Budgeting for Mean, Lean Times (1999) contains funding realities, short primer on district finance, types of budgets, elements of effective budgets, and suggests ways in which teacher-librarians can increase their influence in the budgeting process; includes forms and budgeting formulas.

Proof of the Power: Recent Research on the Impact of the School Library Media Programs on the Academic Achievement of U.S. Public School Students (2001) by Keith Curry Lance examines recent research by providing background, results, and implications as well as a bibliography.
The School Librarian's Role in the Electronic Age (1996) discusses the changing role of the school librarian.
Serving Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Students: Strategies for the School Librarian (1995) discusses how one high school library created a positive environment for ESL students.
Teachers and Librarians: Collaborative Relationships (2000) by Shayne Russell is a short article that defines collaboration, describes conditions favourable to collaboration as well as interpersonal factors and continued commitment, and contains suggested readings.

For the Love of Books Program by Dee Damkoehler, Metcalf Laboratory School describes a book donation program in a school library.

Media Awareness Network: Web Awareness for Librarians: Knowing the Issues contains resources on safety and responsibility online, authentication of information, and online marketing and privacy issues.

New Media Specalist's Page looks like an assignment for a teacher-librarian course. It contains useful information for the new teacher-librarian, media specialist, etc. There are interviewing tips (some really good questions here) as well as hints and advice.

Ontario Library Association: Issue: School Library Staffing In Ontario discusses the erosion in school library staffing.

Oz-TeacherNet: Why use the Internet in the classroom? is a short presentation on using the Internet in classrooms.

School Librarians: A Field Guide to an Evolving Species (PDF) by Joyce Valenza discusses the changing role of the teacher-librarian.

Making a Splash with Summer Reading: Seven Ways Public Librarians Can Team Up With Schools (2003) by Walter Minkel is speaking to public librarians but teacher-librarians may also find it useful to read about some successful partnerships between public librarians and schools in regards to summer reading programs. A related site that might also prove useful is Partners in Learning - Schools & Public Libraries: : An Internet Hotlist on School/Public Library Partnerships by Paula Kelly that contains links to resources on common goals, partnership potential, examples, policy documents, and contact information.

Filtered or Unfiltered? by Ann Curry and Ken Haycock (1 January 2001) is based on a survey questionnaire and it examines the use of filters and discusses their effectiveness.

Guides/Handbooks

CLA: Net Safe; Net Smart: Managing and Communicating About the Internet in the Library contains among other things a 16-page Toolkit (2000; PDF): Internet Service in Public Libraries, Legal Issues, A Parent's Guide to Safety on the Internet, and Public Access: A Media Guide for Libraries.

Cataloguing and Processing: A Resource for School Library Personnel (1997) by the Manitoba Department of Education and Training. Handbook for school libraries that covers library organization, rules and authorities, organization, automation, descriptive cataloguing, subject headings, classification, audiovisual materials, typing catalogue cards, filing cards, processing, MARC cataloguing, and sources of MARC records. There is also an Abbreviations page as well as a Glossary and Bibliography.

Collection Development Training for Arizona Public Libraries was designed for small and rural public libraries, but it is a very handy guide for teacher-librarians as well. The site covers policies, community needs assessment, resource selection, acquisitions, weeding, intellectual freedom, collection assessment, preservation, and donations.

Education Materials Selection Handbook (1990) from the School District of Hillsborough County contains information on policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Handbook for Storytellers offers hints and suggestions on storytelling.

Houston Independent School District: Librarian Appraisal System (1997) contains the history/philosophy of the system, appraisal procedures, forms, and lists competency areas and responsibilities for teacher-librarians.

Information Technology in Education K-12 by Holly Gunn contains information on incorporating technology into the curriculum. The site covers computers in education, education in Canada, information literacy, search engines, internet searching, teacher-librarian sources, virtual school library, and webquests and other online learning modules.

Patchwork: Handbook for Montana's Small School Libraries contains information on the school library media center administration, collection development, acquisitions and organization, information literacy, and additional resources.

Prince Edward Island: Building Information Literacy: Strategies for Developing Informed Decision-Makers and Independent Lifelong Learners is a website that contains information on information literacy and learning, the information process, student learning outcomes, as well as resource-based learning units and help developing your own units.

Queen's Libraries: Library Tutorials
Contains the following useful tutorials: Designing Library Instruction on the Web (13 May 1997), Information Literacy (8 March 1999), The Changing Role of School Librarians, Resource-Based Learning, and Learning Online: Rethinking Library Instruction (11 January 1998).

So You Want to Be a School Media Specialist… (1997) is a guide to becoming a school media specialist from the First Day to Personnel to Facilities. Not very detailed but it provides a quick overview of the job, and links to other resources.

Taft Library Media Centre: Resources for Developing a Collaborative Integrated Instructional Program is divided into Towards a Flexible Schedule: Rationale and Support Materials, and Information Skill Resources for Collaborating with Teachers and Students.

TeleEducation NB: Learning on the Web by Michael Elliot and Rory McGreal is a manual on designing online courses.

UPEI: School Library Program: A Handbook for School Administrators provides information on evaluation, improvement, collection development, relationship between the teacher-librarian and administrator, and links.

Virginia Department of Education: Acceptable Internet Use Policies: A Handbook

When the Censor Comes: A guide for teachers, librarians, booksellers and other who disseminate the printed word (1996) is produced by the Freedom of Expression Committee Book and Periodical Council. The site contains definitions, how to prevent and deal with censorship, sample wording for material selection policies, other resources, and more.

AASL: Position Statement on Resource Based Instruction: Role of the School Library Media Specialist in Reading Development is a short statement on integral elements of an effective reading program.

BC Ministry of Education: Integrated Resource Packages

School District #43: Learning Outcomes for Information Literacy K-12 (September 1999) contains learning outcomes by grade based on the BC curriculum.

Bellingham Public Schools: Library Media Frameworks is a short document that contains the district's vision, standards, and elementary and secondary scenarios.

CSLA: Position Statements: Statement on Effective School Library Programs in Canada (2000) is a 5-paragraph statement on the role of the school library in education.

Canadian School Library Association:
Students' Information Literacy Needs In The 21st Century: Competencies For Teacher-Librarians discusses the professional and personal competencies for an effective teacher-librarian.
Guidelines for Effective School Library Programs
(June, 1988) discusses the rationale behind school library programs.

Government of Saskatchewan: Resource-Based Learning Policy: Guidelines and Responsibilities for Saskatchewan Learning Resource Centres contains guidelines for program, personnel, facilities, collection, and budget. The site also describes the roles of the province, division, and school in developing and maintaining resource centres.

Information Literacy: Guidelines for Kingergarten through Grade 12 are guidelines from California.

IASL: Documents Related to School Librarianship contains IASL documents and articles as well as links to other documents on the Internet.

Lexington Public Schools: Department of Libraries and Information Technologies: Policy Documents contains their vision statement, role description, and technology plan.

Maine Association of School Libraries: SLMS Evaluation Kit contains a job description, preparation guides for the Library Media Specialist and Supervisor, as well as a sample action plan, evaluation form, and sample evaluation.

Mankato Schools Information Literacy Curriculum Guidelines contains guidelines for using information and technology with specific skills. The guidelines are divided into Task Definition, Information Seeking Strategies, Location & Access, Use of Information, Synthesis & Presentation, and Evaluation. There is also a graphic organizer on Unit Planning Design which prove useful.

Ontario School Library Association: Information Studies: Kindergarten to Grade 12 and Statement of Purpose for Ontario's School Library Information Centres, Policy on the School Library Information Centre and the Role of the Teacher-Librarian, and Position Statement on the Role of the Teacher-Librarian.

SKC: School Library Implementation Plan is a plan from one Canadian school which describes their plan in terms of curriculum, staffing, resources, and facility.

Texas Education Agency: Texas School Libraries discusses their school library standards in terms of student excellence, learning environment, curriculum integration, resources, management, and facilities.

A 12 Point Library/Media Program Checklist for Building Administrators (The Book Report, January 1996) by Doug Johnson helps you evaluate the currency of your library/media program. It contains the following 12 points with questions: professional staff and duties, professional support, collection size and development, facilities, curriculum and integration, resource-based teaching, information technology, networking & interlibrary loan, planning/yearly goals, budgeting, telecommunication, and policies/communications.

AASL: Principal's Manual for Your School Library Media Program (PDF) is a 2-page pamphlet for principal's on assessing and planning for the school library media program.

BCTLA: Teachers and Teacher Librarians: Effective Educational Partners is a pamphlet that can be printed and shared with new teachers, or used to promote the library. (PDF)

Calgary Board of Education: School Libraries Supporting Quality Learning (1999; PDF document) is a 7-page pamphlet that describes Calgary's vision of school libraries.

Iowa Educational Media Association: School Library Media Programs (PDF) pamphlet describes the effect on student achievement as well as well as standards for information literacy and student learning.

San Diego County Office of Education: School Library Service Preparation Checklist for Author Visit is a short checklist for teachers or teacher-librarians.

School Libraries in California: School and Public Library Cooperation (PDF) and Additions to the Draft (PDF) describe the nature of partnerships in California between school and public libraries. There are a number of other interesting documents on this site including a handy brochure on weeding and a 3-page document that lets you easily evaluate your library.

Strategies for Developing Teacher Contacts Or: How to Pester Your Teachers by Debra Kay Logan offers 14 quick tips on wooing teachers.

Texas Education Agency: Evaluation for the School Librarian (PDF) contains a self-report, and forms for the evaluation of curriculum integration, resources, management, public relations, and professional responsibilities as well as the evaluation criteria and intervention plans.
